Thalidomide Beneficial for Older Multiple Myeloma Patients (Posted: 03/27/2006) - In this phase III clinical trial, older patients - most over the age of 65 - with previously untreated multiple myeloma did significantly better than a comparison group when thalidomide was added to the conventional chemotherapy melphalan plus prednisone, according to the March 11, 2006, issue of the Lancet.

Thalidomide Effective in Newly Diagnosed Multiple Myeloma (Posted: 02/15/2006) - Patients with previously untreated multiple myeloma responded better to induction therapy with the drug dexamethasone when thalidomide was added to the mix, according to the Jan. 20, 2006, issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Bortezomib (Velcade®) Delays Progression of Advanced Multiple Myeloma Longer than Standard Therapy: Results of the APEX Trial (Posted: 06/05/2004, Reviewed: 08/21/2007) - Early results from an international phase III trial show that bortezomib (Velcade®), a new targeted cancer drug, was more effective than standard therapy at delaying disease progression in patients with multiple myeloma that had relapsed or become resistant to other treatments.

15. High-Dose Chemotherapy Extends Survival in Multiple Myeloma Patients (Posted: 05/08/2003, Reviewed: 03/15/2006) - Patients with multiple myeloma who received high-dose chemotherapy followed by a stem-cell transplant survived about one year longer on average than patients who were treated with a standard combination chemotherapy regimen, according to the May 8, 2003, New England Journal of Medicine.
